From a major lawsuit settlement (five years in the making) that resulted in more equitable trade terms and discount schedules to the founding of American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (ABFFE), ABA has invested significant time and resources in working to ensure the needs of independents are voiced – and heard.
ABA is fostering meaningful dialogue between our members and representatives in Washington, demonstrating to publishers the value of the independent market, and ensuring that independent booksellers have a say in the development of technological standards.
The work continues. Local First initiatives, free expression, and e-commerce taxation parity issues are just a few of the areas in which ABA continues to vigorously represent the interests of independent booksellers in regard to public policy, trade issues, and literacy. Most recently, at a series of special meetings, ABA presented to publishers detailed reports of sales figures for independent markets. For many titles, sales in independent stores surpassed the independent market share for books as a whole. ABA staff will be conducting these meetings – which validate the viability and buying power of independent booksellers – on a regular basis throughout the year.
