Toadstool Surveys Customers on E-Reading Habits

Toadstool Bookshops owner Willard Williams recently found out what more than 400 of his customers think about e-books and e-readers.

Williams received more than 400 responses to an online survey sent to customers of his three New Hampshire bookstores. Among the key findings: Ten percent of the survey respondents own e-readers. In addition to asking customers whether they own e-readers, the survey also asked questions about e-books, the store's e-commerce site, and the physical bookstores.

E-Books From Five Publishers Delisted on ABA IndieCommerce

On the cusp of the April 1 switch to an agency model for e-books, negotiations were ongoing between five major publishers and wholesalers, including Ingram, and others in the supply chain. In a communication to IndieCommerce participants, ABA COO Len Vlahos explained that a short-term consequence of the switch would be the delisting of e-books from Hachette, HarperCollins (including Zondervan), Macmillan, Penguin, and Simon & Schuster on IndieCommerce websites.

Browser's Briefing: Idlewild Books features world literature and travel guides, organized by country. Owner David Del Vecchio noted that the store sells more literature than guidebooks, with most of the customers shopping the store for their next great read rather than looking to plan a trip.

Retail Bookstore Sales Dip in February

 February retail sales at bookstores were down by 0.7 percent, compared with February 2009, according to preliminary figures recently released by the Bureau of the Census. February 2010 bookstore sales are estimated at $1,003 million, compared with sales of $1,010 million for the same period last year.

Final January sales were $2,275 million, down 0.09 percent from last month's preliminary estimates and 1.9 percent higher than January 2009.

New Materials Available in E-Fairness Action Kit

This week, the American Booksellers Association began adding state-specific fact sheets to the E-Fairness Action Kit (E-FACT) on BookWeb.org, ABA's member website. Fact sheets are now available for California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Mexico, and Tennessee. Over the next month, ABA will add fact sheets for each of the states that collect sales tax but do not yet have e-fairness laws.
