The May 2010 Indie Next List Preview

Here's a preview of the titles on the May Indie Next List flier, on its way to ABA member stores in the IndieBound movement, as well as the May Indie Notables, which will be featured in a downloadable flier and shelf-talkers on, beginning May 1.

Along with the May Indie Next Great Reads, the newly redesigned print flier features an expanded list (12) of "Now In Paperback" titles with jacket images. The month's Notables no longer appear on the print flier.

Shelf talkers for each of the 2010 Indies Choice Book Award winners and honor books are now available for download in PDF format on

Four shelf talkers easily print on a single 8-1/2" x 11" piece of paper. Each proclaims "winner" or "honor award" and features the title, author, and publisher, along with the award category and the Indies Choice Book Awards logo. A few general Indies Choice Book Award "winner" shelf talkers round out the offerings.

Obituary: Jean Barnes-Wood

Jean Hesket Barnes-Wood, founder of the former Jean Barnes Books in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and co-founder of Wood 'N' Barnes Publishing & Distribution, passed away on Sunday, April 25.

In 1961, Jean Barnes started the bookstore to fill the needs she and her fellow parishioners at Disciples of Christ Church in Oklahoma had for books addressing psychology and "humanist" topics.

Latino Books Month Reading Lists, Kit Available

To help bookstores and libraries mark May is Latino Books Month, the Association of American Publishers' Publishing Latino Voices for America (PLVA) Task Force has teamed with the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) and others to present a recommended reading list of children's books intended to foster "bookjoy" and to encourage families to read together. The list includes titles in English and in Spanish as well as bilingual titles, nonfiction, picture books, and novels, all celebrating Latino culture and Latin American identity.

Spring Booksellers Forums Underway

The American Booksellers Association kicked off its 2010 Spring Forum Tour last weekend in conjunction with the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance and the National Association of College Stores' Campus Market Expo (CAMEX) in Orlando, Florida. At the forum, led by ABA CEO Oren Teicher, booksellers shared their thoughts and concerns about e-books and how indies can participate moving forward, as well as ideas for alternative business models and new ways to find customers.
