Advance Access

Advance Access is a complimentary twice-monthly email sent by ABA to member bookstores containing offers from ABA Publisher Partners to receive galleys, reading copies, or finished books for review. After receiving the title from the publishers, stores can decide whether to carry it, and nominate the title for the Indie Next List. Book Awards

The annual Indies Choice Book Awards and E.B. White Read Aloud Awards honor best-loved titles of indie booksellers. The Indies Choice Awards recognize the handselling expertise of independent booksellers, and the Book of the Year winners and Honor Award recipients are all titles nominated by ABA member booksellers to the Indie Next Lists. The E.B. White Read-Aloud Awards honor books that reflect the universal appeal to a wide range of ages embodied by E.B. White’s collection of beloved books. Digital White Box with NetGalley

NetGalley and the ABA have partnered to introduce more booksellers to new titles from a variety of publishers.

By signing up with NetGalley, ABA-member booksellers will receive a free monthly email with pre-approved access to select digital galleys of upcoming print books. Sign up here; members will need to first login to BookWeb.org. Each individual working at a member store can receive their own Digital White Box email---no need to share.
 
Digital galleys are easy to access through NetGalley, and membership is free. NetGalley works with over 300 publishers, from large trade publishers to university presses, nonfiction and craft books, children's book publishers, and more. 
 

Gift Certificates

Members may purchase printed paper gift certificates from ABA by using this online form. Two styles are available: "A Book is a Present You Can Open Again and Again," illustrated by Mary Engelbreit, and "Books, the Perfect Gift (A Child of Books)," illustrated by Oiliver Jeffers and Sam Winston.

Monthly Box Mailings

ABA sends all qualifying stores located in the U.S. selling predominantly new books a Monthly Box as well a quarterly Children’s Box.
The Monthly Box mailing contains:

    •    The initial allotment of the latest Indie Next List flyers
    •    Time-sensitive marketing materials from ABA for campaigns such as Indies First and Banned Books Week
    •    Point-of-purchase resources from publishers such as shelftalkers, easelbacks, bookmarks, and posters
    •    Vendor sell sheets and catalogs
    •    Galleys, Advance Reading Copies (ARCs), and finished books that publishers wish for booksellers to read and consider stocking, handselling, and nominating to
the Indie Next List
 
Because the Monthly Box Mailing materials are free to members, and vendor supplies are limited, stores have been asked to actively participate in a variety of ABA programs in order to earn the box. Participation is reviewed on a monthly basis.

Beginning with the April 2019 Monthly Mailing, in order to receive the Monthly Box mailing stores must:

    •    Submit regular nominations to the Indie Next List
    •    Report regularly to the Indie Bestseller List
    •    Be an ABA bookstore member in good standing
 
Participation in other ABA programs and activities – e.g. IndieCommerce, IndieLite, ABC Children’s Group, and Indies Introduce – are taken into account when determining the contents of a store’s Monthly Box Mailing.

Bookstore members of the ABC Children’s Group automatically receive the Quarterly Children’s Mailing.

All new member bookstores are eligible to receive the Monthly Box Mailing for three months regardless of their participation in programs, although after that the mailings will be suspended if the criteria above have not been met. Any suspensions will be lifted once a store resumes regularly reporting and nominating.

Libris Business Insurance

Created by ABA, the League of Independent Book Retailer Insurance Services has been working with independent bookstores and publishers since 1997. LIBRIS works directly with business owners as well as with local agents around the country.

What sets Libris apart?

  • • New Store Benefit. Libris gives credit for previous bookstore experience or retail management experience for new bookstore owners.
  • • Coverage for Visiting Authors. Unlike most insurance programs, Libris covers visiting authors as additional insureds.
  • • Website/Computer Coverage. Libris offers $50,000 in website coverage and $5,000 for computer fraud at no additional cost.
  • • Seasonal Increase in Merchandise is Covered. Libris accounts for increased inventory at no additional charge.
  • • Used Book Benefit. Libris values used book inventory at the cost to replace with like kind and quality, and does not depreciate used books after a loss.
  • • Special Event Coverage. Libris understands that bookstore events are a common activity and coverage needs to be built into the policy.
  • • Off-Premises Coverage for Exhibitions and Conferences. Libris includes coverage for inventory and property used for off-site events, an important part of your business.
