Creating Content

IndieCommerce Overview

In this webinar we will discuss:

  • Message Center
  • IndieCommunication newsletter
  • Store preferences
  • Custom content... and more.

Adding Books

It is important to keep in mind that the vast majority of titles listed on IndieBound.org, and on our IndieCommerce member websites come from Ingram Book Company's iPage database. Generally speaking, if a title is listed with them (even if they don't actually carry it), it is listed with us. If you are a publisher, you'll want to contact Ingram to inquire about listing your catalog with them. You can find publisher-specific contact info here:

Blogs

The blog module allows users to create and maintain a blog on your website. Blogs are usually written in an informal and conversational style and updated regularly.

NOTE: The ‘Blog’ module needs to be enabled for your site. If you have not previously requested we enabled it for you please contact staff@bookweb.org. We will send you confirmation once it has been enabled.

CREATE THE BLOG

Navigate to: Content > Add Content > Blog Entry

Menus

A website navigation menu is a collection of links grouped together in a horizontal or vertical block. Menus are usually at the top of a website; menus can be added to the footer and side navigational bars as well.

Organized and easy-to-follow navigation for a website is very important for the overall user experience. When planning your menu, it’s important to keep in mind the information your users need to access quickly and frequently, and make those items clearly identifiable and accessible.

Staff Reviews

Staff reviews can be added to all books and are especially useful when creating ‘Staff Pick’ pages.

‘Staff Reviews’ can be added two ways:

OPTION 1: ADDED BY A STORE ADMIN/EDITOR ON A BOOK PRODUCT PAGE (IndieCommerce members only)

Navigate to: www.yoursitename.com/book/ISBN (or use the search feature to navigate to the book product page)

Blocks

Blocks are the boxes of content (such as "Find a Wishlist" or "IndieBound Next List") that can be displayed in regions (such as header or sidebar) and be set to display on all or specific pages. Blocks can be composed of text, images, links, and other standard HTML. They can also be used to embed codes for widgets from outside sources like YouTube or Facebook.

Events

Creating ‘Events’ is a highly recommended step, as you want to keep visitors of your website informed on things going on in the store. The steps below give you all the options available when doing so. The only required options are those noted with a red asterisk*.

CREATE AN EVENT

Navigate to: Content > Add Content > Event

There are several available fields for you to utilize to create the content of your page:

Custom Content Types

CREATING CUSTOM CONTENT TYPES

When you create content on your website, each item of content is categorized by a specific content type. The websites we provide are Drupal based and come with several standard content types (page, book page, event, etc.), with each content type containing the information and settings that make it suited for a specific purpose. At times, you may want to create entirely new content types for purposes specific to your store needs.
