Readers are encouraged to share their love of bookstores by taking part in the Love Your Bookstore Challenge during the weeklong celebration of Love Your Bookstore, a new retail holiday that will take place from Saturday, November 10, to Friday, November 16.
The founding sponsors of Love Your Bookstore are Sourcebooks, Publishers Weekly, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, Abrams, LitHub, Grove Atlantic, the Children’s Book Council, BookCon, and Libro.fm.
To take part in the Love Your Bookstore Challenge, readers can:
- Go into their local bookstore and take a picture of the book they are most excited to gift this holiday season or a book they love or want to receive.
- Post the photos to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter between November 10 and 16 with the hashtag #loveyourbookstore to be entered to win bookish prizes. When posting, challenge three to five friends to go love their favorite bookstores, too.
The Love Your Bookstore steering committee is comprised of Becky Anderson, co-owner of Anderson’s Bookshops and past president of the American Booksellers Association; Carl Lennertz, executive director of the Children’s Book Council; Dominique Raccah, publisher and CEO of Sourcebooks; and George Slowik Jr., president of Publishers Weekly.
In honor of the Love Your Bookstore Challenge, Sourcebooks will make a donation to the Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation. “We are thrilled to participate and ready to give bookstores lots of love!” said Binc Executive Director Pamela French.
“Any grassroots campaign to promote reading and great books in such a positive, spontaneous way is a balm for America’s soul during these times,” said Lennertz. “I truly hope this new campaign becomes a new annual tradition!”
“Bookstores are amazing and important places for us all culturally, and we know that booksellers help readers discover and share the magic of books,” Raccah said. “They create communities of readers that make a difference because books change lives. We want to give everyone a way to celebrate their favorite bookstore.”
“We’re always pleased to work with industry colleagues to promote bookstores to consumers,” said ABA CEO Oren Teicher.
