Wi14 to Offer Full Schedule of Parties and Receptions [3]

The 2019 Winter Institute [5] (Wi14) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, will feature a wide array of parties and receptions where booksellers, publishers, and authors can socialize throughout the four-day event, including:

Ingram’s Indies by the Fireside [6]: Tuesday, January 22, 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Albuquerque Convention Center, La Sala)

Relax and chat by the fire in La Sala with independent booksellers and publishers from around the country and the globe. With more than 25 presses represented at Winter Institute and over 600 independent publishers under its wing, Ingram is home to some of the most brilliant and beautiful books in the marketplace. Chat with publishers and editors, enjoy a cup of coffee and New Mexico’s famous biscochito butter cookies, and browse an array of books loved by Ingram staff.

Wi14 Welcome Reception [7]: Tuesday, January 22, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (Hyatt Regency Grand Pavilion Ballroom)

Co-sponsored by Shelf Awareness, ABA’s 2019 Winter Institute Welcome Reception is an opportunity to celebrate the beautiful state of New Mexico while enjoying cocktails, snacks, and the company of your colleagues from around the world.

The Afterparty [8]: Tuesday, January 22, 10:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. (Hotel Andaluz Casablanca Ballroom)

All booksellers are invited to dance to live music, drink with new and old friends, and ring in Winter Institute 14 together. This opportunity for fun and engaging conversations about bookselling is hosted by the National Book Foundation, LitHub, Bookselling Without Borders, and indie presses Archipelago, Catapult, Counterpoint, Europa Editions, Graywolf, New Directions, New York Review Books, Other Press, and Soft Skull.

Ingram Drinks & Hors d’Oeuvres Open Reception [9]: Wednesday, January 23, 6:20 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (La Sala)

Wi14 lead sponsor Ingram will host an open reception to close day one of the institute. Join your colleagues for drinks and nibbles.

Scholastic’s YA Fest Afterparty [10]: Wednesday, January 23, 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. (Hotel Andaluz Barcelona Ballroom)

Enjoy drinks and desserts at the Scholastic YA Fest Afterparty! Meet YA authors, get a first look at upcoming books, and take home gifts.

Author Cocktail Reception [11]: Thursday, January 24, 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (Albuquerque Convention Center, Ballroom B/C)

Thanks to the generosity of ABA’s publisher sponsors, nearly 100 authors and illustrators will be on hand to chat with booksellers and autograph new and forthcoming titles at the Author Reception. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be served.

Author Lunch Reception [12]: Friday, January 25, 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. (Albuquerque Convention Center, Brazos)

Enjoy lunch and meet an additional lineup of authors and illustrators from Winter Institute’s sponsors, who will be on hand to chat with booksellers and autograph their new and forthcoming titles.

Wi14 Closing Reception and Author Signing [13]: Friday, January 25, 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (Albuquerque Convention Center, Kiva Foyer)

Close out Wi14 to the sounds of mariachi music, signings with the Salute to New Mexico [14] authors, plus Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark (Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered: The Definitive How-To Guide), and a fun, fast heads-or-tails fundraiser game for the Book Industry Charitable Foundation [15] (Binc). 

In addition, booksellers have two opportunities to take a break from the festivities at the Albuquerque Convention Center:

The Quiet Room (San Juan)

The Quiet Room is intended to provide a quiet, calm space where conference attendees can spend time away from noise, light, and other stimuli. The quiet room is not available for conversations or meetings. It is open during the following hours:

  • Wednesday, January 23, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, January 24, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Friday, January 25, 9:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

MPIBA Hospitality Suite (Laguna)

The Mountains & Plains Independent Booksellers Association [16] is pleased to host the Hospitality Suite at this year’s Winter Institute. Stop by for a chance to decompress, grab a beverage, and refuel before heading back out to join your peers. Open to booksellers from all regions during the following hours:
